Chmielno is a charming village in the Kartuzy district, about 33 km west of Gdańsk. It has about 1,600 inhabitants, and most of them culturally describe themselves as Kashubs. Chmielno, the so-called “Little Pearl of Kashubia” lies between two lakes (Białe and Kłodno) and attracts many tourists looking for unspoiled nature and kind hosts. Archaeologists date the beginnings of the village to the 7th-9th centuries. However, many monuments of great historical and archaeological value have been devastated over the centuries. You can learn a little more about the history of this place from the plaque placed on the site of the former stronghold located on the isthmus between the lakes Białe and Kłodno. The list of monuments recognized and registered in Chmielno includes: the parish church of St. Peter and Paul with a tower from 1860 and interior fittings from the 16th-18th centuries; burial ground around the church; Roman Catholic cemetery from 1884 and a wooden hut/house from the 19th century.
The last one hundred and sixteen years of the development of this village is closely related to the ten-generation Necel potter family. The style of Necel‘s ceramics stands out from all other pottery in Poland, regional and national, thanks to the unique patterns of decoration, characterized by the motifs of stars, fish scales, tulips, lilies, wreaths and lilac branches. Since 1993, the collection of local ceramics and the history of this pottery can be admired in the Kashubian Ceramics Museum (https://necel.pl/).
